Ameenah Abdur-Raheem
Email Marketing Specialist
I would describe the culture as light-hearted and enthusiastic, mixed with determination and a growth mindset. It's a fun place to work, and the company has good values that it consistently implements. Everyone works hard and strives to do the best that they can to meet team and client expectations.
How does DMi foster connection with hybrid or fully remote work? There are always fun events and activities being offered that allow people from anywhere to participate, whether it's virtual or in person. I think this effort helps remote employees feel included and have the opportunity to connect with others in the company. Remote employees are also always welcome to visit the office if they want. Having the annual company event in the summer and the holiday party in the winter are also great ways the DMi brings everyone together. On a day to day, most teams have morning huddles, which gives everyone on the team to catch up with each other and share their goals for the day.
What is a typical day like in your role?A typical day starts with reviewing my dashboard and then attending the morning huddle with my team, sharing any good news, priorities, or roadblocks. From there, I usually jump right into drafting any follow-up responses that I owe to team members or clients that came through later in the previous work day. I have client calls and internal team syncs spread throughout my day, so I attend those once the time comes. My other day-to-day work includes managing email projects in Wrike and working on any strategy-related tasks such as flow proposals, timeline updates, and reporting requests. A large part of my role is making sure that email build work has been kicked off internally, approving them before they are shared with the client, and making sure they are stood up appropriately in the client's ESP before scheduling.
What is the work/life balance like at DMi for you?Work/life balance for me is a bit different now that I am in a newer role. Since I was recently promoted to Email Marketing Specialist, I am still experiencing the learning curve that comes with a change in workload and overall responsibility. So, I do find myself working a little bit longer in the day to stay on top of everything currently. My expectation, though, is that once I'm more experienced in handling the work that I do now, it won't take me as long to get things done, and I will be able to return to the good balance that I had previously.
How does DMi's mission correlate to your overall career goals?Growing up, I was that kid who would have a new career aspiration every time someone asked. And though it seemed random to others, for me, they were all avenues that could lead to my overall goal, which is to do and be a part of something important. So, my career goals are centered around three traits: purpose, compassion, and innovation. Job titles and position levels change, but it’s the continuous presence of these traits that makes a career for me. DMi’s mission to "create opportunities for growth" is done using the same traits. It can be seen through the work that we do and the interactions that we have with each other and our clients. Because of this, I feel like being at DMi is helping me achieve my goal and discover more about the kind of important work I want to be a part of.
How authentically are you able to come to work at DMi? And please explain why?Overall, I come to work pretty authentically for the most part. I don't feel the need to present a "fake" version of myself when I'm around coworkers. But there is a side of me that, like most people, is kept separate from work. While it's important to be authentic and feel that I can be in the workplace, there is still a level of awareness that I have that helps me filter what is and isn't something to be shared as a part of my work environment. The reason for things being filtered varies, but the important thing is that I don't feel external pressure to do so. The choice and reason that I choose to filter is mine and mine alone.
What advice would you give to folks thinking about working at DMi?Don't be afraid to apply. Take advantage of the interview process to learn about the people you may be working with and just be yourself. At the very least, you will get the chance to talk to a few of the nicest people you'll ever meet. The company values different personalities and experiences, and it’s always good to have an idea of how yours may fit with the team and the company culture. Though it’s a smaller agency, the work is still fast-paced, and the company is constantly growing, so keep that in mind based on your own preferences.
